…Step 3:

Discuss the various stages of creative writing (pre-writing, first draft, editing & final copy). Introduce the concept of ‘Brainstorming’ & show students the ‘Brainstorming My Ideas’ Graphic Organizer. For Upper Elementary focus on the 5 W’s (Who?, What?, Where? When? Why? & How?). Lower Elementary focus on Sequencing Ideas (First, Next, Then, After That & Finally). Think-Pair-Share: Encourage students to think about how they want their story to unfold, discuss with a partner or small group their brainstorming ideas for the ‘Sentence Starters’. As a whole group, share story ideas. For primary students, write down a few vocabulary words which were shared during the discussions. For Upper Elementary, you might want to model how to include more descriptive words to their writing or maybe focus on how their writing style could better capture a reader’s attention.
